Video Editing History - CMX 340 "The Edge"
At the Cutting Edge!

Anyone remember this beast? A 2/3 machine offline system with soft-keys, and built in audio/video effects. It never really caught on but was quite easy to use, and produced good lists.

This one belonged to a friend of mine, John Cammish, but it never made him any money. Proper off-line didn't catch on in the UK till the advent of digital NLE's in the 1990's, and it was very difficult to get producers to pay a proper rate.

Just to show how easy it was to learn, these two photos show Zanna Wilford, a student from the London College of Printing's, Film & TV Production Course. She had some experience with the Sony RM440 cuts-only editor, and after some training from me, she was able to off-line a complex fashion/music video with long sequences of back to back dissolves. The list needed a bit of "fettling" in 409, but I conformed it on 1" tape at Molinare with a CMX-340, almost "hands-off".

If I can find a copy of the video, I shall make an MPEG file for you to see! It featured clothes by P.W.Forte, shoes by Manolo Blahnik, and was shot by Molly Dineen in the derelict Whiteleys department store in London.

Zanna went on to make a name for herself as a stills photographer, specialising in fashion and advertising. Molly is a highly respected documentary film maker, with recent projects including intimate film portraits of ex-Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell and UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
